National Science Day celebrations at Jamia Hamdard University

Each year the National Science Day is celebrated on February 28 to mark the discovery of the ‘Raman Effect’ by Sir C. V. Raman Ji on 28th February 1928. For this discovery Sir C.V. Raman was awarded the Nobel Prize in Physics in 1930. The theme for this year’s National Science Day is “Integrated Approach in S&T for Sustainable Future”. Jamia Hamdard takes pride in celebrating this day since last 10 years. This year’s programme was graced by Dr. Jitendra Singh, Hon’ble Minister of State (Independent Charge), Ministry of Earth Sciences, Minister of State (Independent Charge) of Science & Technology, Government of India and Minister of State in the Prime Minister’s Office as the Chief Guest.
Dr. S. Chandrasekhar, Secretary, Department of Science & Technology was the Guest of Honour. Janab Hammad Ahmed, Hon’ble Chancellor of Jamia Hamdard also graced the occasion. Prof. (Dr.) M. Afshar Alam, Vice Chancellor, Jamia Hamdard presided over the function. The Hon’ble Minister inaugurated the Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM) facility at the School of Pharmaceutical Education & Research (SPER). This facility is supported by the DST-PURSE grant and is one of its kinds in Delhi NCR. TEM facility will greatly augment the research activities of Jamia Hamdard in the field of biomedical and pharmaceutical research. While welcoming the guest Prof. S. Raisuddin, Advisor (Research) emphasized on the research centric orientation of Jamia Hamdard and highlighted the high quality of research conducted by the research scholars and faculty members. Dr. Jitendra Singh Ji in his speech spoke about the on-going Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav to commemorate 75 years of our independence. He was of view that it was also an Amrit Mahotsav for Indian Science. He emphasized that science is universal and knows no boundaries. He enlightened the audience with the initiatives of International Yoga Day and AYUSH Ministry taken up by the Prime Minister to inculcate and promote the indigenous science and medicine practices. He urged that efforts should be made to integrate all the medicine systems under one roof so that a patient with a single card can consult all the medicine system consultants suiting to his/her disease.
The Secretary DST in his speech mentioned about support offered by DST to Jamia Hamdard and he urged that research facilities, especially the equipment to be made accessible to all at an affordable fee and facility should be open 24x7 manner. The Vice Chancellor thanked DST for continued support. He assured that all efforts will be made to extend facilities and training to students and teachers. In this regard, under STUTI programme of DST a large number of students from Delhi schools and teachers have visited the campus to see and feel research laboratories and instrument facilities. In the next phase of programme training of researchers will be organized. He congratulated all the faculty members and research scholars for their scientific achievements.
On this occasion, Hon’ble Minister released 11 books written/edited by faculty members. Faculty members and scholars were also felicitated for other scientific achievements and their high quality publications. Jamia Hamdard witnessed a significant jump in quality publications from the last year.
